Charges of ill-treating a sheep and resisting the police were heard against John Forrester at the Magistrate’s Court at Lyttelton to-day, before Mr S. E. M’Carthy, S.M. Mr C. S. Thomas appeared for the defendant. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate dismissed the charge of cruelty and fined defendant £2 for resisting the police. Myrtle Hill, licensee of the Efmpire Hotel, was fined £2 and costs on a charge ol permitting drunkenness on the premises. Derry’s Private Band will play the following programme in the Victoria Squaro rotunda to-morrow evening:— March, “ Diamond Crowri ” (Burt) ; selection, “ Tails Up ” (Brahave) ; valse, “La Bello France *’ (Tobani) ; selection, “ Songs of the Sea ” (Douglas); march, “ Victory ”--(Woodruff) ; valse, “lied, White and Blue” (Tobani); selection, “Maid of tho Mountains” (Simon); march, “The Hurricane ** (Shank?;. “ Work on the Chain Hills tunnel, on the Dunedin-Mosgiel duplication line, was almost Gilbertian,** Mr W. R. Davidson informed the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers to-day. “The men nearly cried if they were put off the job,” ho said. “When work was going at both ends they were quite excited in the competition to see which would be first. Farmers’ Unions and similar organisations met the delegates and assured them of co-operation, hut so far the result has been disappoirtting, It being stated at to-day’s meeting of the North Canterbury Farmers* Union executive that only one woman immigrant had been secured for Canterbury under the scheme outlined. The Department of Immigration had been written to, but had replied that it had no further information to impart meanwhile.
