Morkan© returned last night from Dunedin, where lie has been acting as examiner in gynecology and midwifery at the final medical examinations of Otago University. Mr J. R. Templin has returned to Christchurch after visiting the Waikato, Thames, and Bay of Plenty districts, where hydro-electrical schemes are contemplated. Colonel Hiram Bingham, Professor of La'tin-Ameriean History at Ynle University. and a member of several learned societies, arrived in New Zealand by the Navua, and will tour the Dominion. [ Mr H. J- Thornton, assistant-secre-tary to the Wanganui Education Board, was yesterday appointed secretary to the Taranaki Education Board, in place of Mr P. S. Whitcombe, who has retired. The death occurred at Wellington on Saturday morning after a lingering and painful illness of Captain Alfred Slater Moys, states the “ Dominion.” Born in Liverpool in 1858, he received his education at the Queen’s Institute in that c-ity. and choosing the sea as a career, his apprenticeship was served on one of Ins father’s vessels. At a later date deceased joined the White Star Tine. His interest became focused on Australasia, and he sailed for the Southern Seas as chief officer on the New Zealand Shipping Company’s sailing ship Hurunui. The Lyttelton dry dock had just been completed, and the Hurunui on this occasion broke, the blue ribbon at the opening of the dock. The deceased joined the Union Steapi Ship Company, and remained with it for many years. His death recalls the ill-fated Wairarapn, on which vessel he was serving as chief officer at the time of her wreck on the Great Barrier in 1894. Prior to this date, he had been in five wrecks and a collision. On his Severance from the Union Company, he served as officer with various companies trading ground New Zealand. He then joined the Government steamer Tutanekai, iu which vessel he sailed for seven years. The deceased left the Government Service to sail as master of the s.s_. Rimu. About four years ago Captain Moys left the sea to take up transport duties during the war. 111-health overtook him during the past year.
