Mr Justice Arnold (England), who is touring New is at present in Christchurch. He is staying at St ElmoSitting as the Domain Board, the Kaiapoi Borough Councillors last evening gave the Y.M.C.A. permission to erect a permanent camp at Kairaki. The result of the Ashburton County school gardens competition, held under tho auspices of tho Ashburton A. and P. Association, was as follows :—Mayfield, 75 points; Ashton, 70; Allenton, 00- Tinwald, 58; Hampstead, 56; Lismore, 50; Fairton, 50; Chertsey, 40. The wheat yields throughout North Canterbury aro said to be beyond eafilier anticipations. At- to-day’s meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Farmer*** Union .Mr Mulhollanil (Darfield) said that in his district the yield was quite 10 per cent better than was anticipated. Mr G. Sheat U>unsandel) said that wheat in his district was threshing beyond expectations, and he estimated tlie average at 29 bushels per acre. Little damage had been done to the crops, in view of the amount of rain experienced. Borne yields had been up to 43 and •'lO, and on the other hand some had been as low as 10 bushels. Mr W- A. Banks said that it was well to mention the low yFelds, as they often read of the record yield per acre, but little of the low returns. That caused misunderstandings. Judging by the comments of some of those present at the meeting, farmers are expecting lower prices for their wheat.
