TRAMWAY QUARRY.

RECENT CRITICISMS, GENERAL MANAGER'S REPLY. Air F. Thompson, general manager of the tramways, to-day replied to criticisms by correspondents in the 4 ‘ Star ” of the Tramway Board’s policy in regard to its quarry at Mount Pleasant. *• In spite of the fact that we have handled a certain quantity, of scoria, which most quarries have to do,” he said, our cost, after allowing for the creation of a substantial reserve fund, to provide for depreciation of plant and to wipe out tho price paid for the land, is considerably less than the sum tho board would have had to pay private quarry-owners. The advantages of the position are that the board now is able to obtain an uninterrupted supply of metal. “ I may add that the board also lias acquired the freehold of a fine deposit of lace-shingle at Sockburn. The deposit is near the railway station, and the board has a tramway siding into the pit. It- has found this arrangement to be very economical in the renewal of lines now in hand, and in the construction of new lines.”
