"DIRT MONEY” CLAUSE.
DISPUTE AT WELLINGTON. fPi*B Press Association.} WELLINGTON, January 26. A delicate position lias arisen as the result of a dispute between the boilermakers engaged on ship repair work at the Patent and til© Patent Slip Company, aipi Messrs TV. Cable and Co. Two boats are on tlie slip, the Kennedy and Alexander. The Kennedy was badly damaged by grounding on Jb'oxton bar, and the repairs necessary were very extensive. A great deal of work lias already been done* but now the boilermakers decline to proceed with certain riveting unless they are paid “ dirt money ’ while engaged in this work. The parties are at variance over the interpretation of the “ dirt money ” clause, as to whether the men are entitled to <( dirt money” in accordance with their claim. Already one conference has proved abortive. It is hoped that a second conference will reach a settlement.
