PRICE OF WHEAT.
FARMERS’ ATTITUDE. The recent wheat conference was mentioned at to-day’s meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury ; district of the Farmers’ Union. The chairman said he would like to compliment the Minister on the way he ! had met the farmers in accordance with his promise to them twelve months ago. Some of the farmers, he considered, had forestalled the Minister in the matter, through being over-anxious and lie thought the Minister rather resented being asked to hold tho meeting before the time he had promised to meet the farmers. As a result of the conference the wheat growers had been appointed a committee to fix the price with the Minister next month. 'lTie meeting had been fairly evenly ■ divided on the question whether there should be a. free market. *■ The ‘ ‘ Lyttelton. Times ” had rather slated the Farmers’ Union in regard to the matter, but it was not a Farmers’ Union matter at all, but a meeting of wheatgrowers. As far as the speaker could see the farmers were Taking a leaf out of Labour’s book in demanding a minimum price for their produce. It was decided without further discussion to write to the Minister and compliment him on the way ho had met the farmers.
