The Washington correspondent of the , ‘- New York Times ’’ learns authori- \ tativelv that, despite London denials, Sir Auckland Geddes was summoned f Home to inform the Government of \ Mr Harding’s intentions regarding disf armament. The Naval Committee of the- House of Representatives is paving the way for Mr Harding's project, by obtaining the views of the leaders in military and naval circles. JAPAN’S POSITION. CTRAIN OF AN UNEQUAL STRUGGLE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. fßeceived January 19, 10.50 a.m-) NEW YORK, January 18. The Tokio correspondent of the '* New York World"’ interviewed Viscount i Vcliida, who said that no other nation can speak for the great cause of disarmament with such effect as the United States, for no other nation occupies so unique a position. It is the tragic destiny of a comparatively small but self-reliant nation such as Japan, to be obliged to watch anxiously the dispositions and measures of naj tions more fortunately circumstanced { and resourced. Their initiative, therefore. will be heartily welcomed by Japan, for it will not only relieve her of the strain of an unequal struggle, but make possible the realisation oi a modest desire for a career of peaceful development.
