ORCHARDS AFFECTED.

SEVERE GALE CAUSES DAMAGE. [Per Press Association.] HASTINGS, January 17. Fruitgrowers of the district suffered severely by Saturday's gale. Tho orchards are well sheltered in the direction of the prevailing wind, but this gale came in the opposite direction, end the trees getting the full force of the wind were stripped of apples, pears, plums and peaches to a considerable extent. Trees were broken down and in some cases uprooted. Barge quantities of fruit are lying in many cases not sufficiently matured to be of any good. The .loss is considerable, especially on the'top of the shortage f.f the season’s crops.
