BRITISH INDUSTRY.
POSITION INVESTIGATED. THE REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT. EXTREME LEFT ACTIVITY. By Telegraph—Pre«.s Association—Copyright. •• The Times ” Service. (Received January’ 17, V/.10 a.m.> LONDON, January 15. “The Times” publishes the first of a series of articles by Dr Arthur. iShadwell, written after a tour of the industrial areas. He closely analyses the revolutionary movement in Britain, and finds there is a maze of activity, but little cohesion. Individualism is rampant among the Communistic societiesAlthough London is the headquarters, the chief stronghold is the Clyde, where there is explosive material and a prodigious circulation of literature. Tho moderates think that acute unemployment may prove a match to the powder magazine. Moreover 60,009 Sinn Feiners drill regularly in Glasgow in their own halls.
Dr Shadwell does not find much of an Extremist tendency among genuine unionists. Indeed Bolshevik stock has fallen heavily in Britain and on the Continent. He welcomes the activities of the Labour colleges, with their full time tutors and a strong propaganda influence, because Tie is convinced that only passion stands for a bloody revolution, while reason makes for reform. Dr Shadwell is convinced that the trend of events amongst all industrial parties, excepting the passionate Extreme may be entrusted io tho Labour Party in Parliament.
