LUXURIES.
NO STINT IN BRITAIN[From Our Correspondent. j WELLINGTON, January 11. Speaking of the need for economy, individual and national, both here and at Home, Councillor A. R Atkinson stated to a representative of the “Star” that the supply of Email luxuries of every kind for personal consumption seemed to be absolutely witnout stint in the Old Country lor instance, one would see in the best parts of London, such as Piccadilly, whole shop windows on the finest possible sites given up to chocolates, confectionery of all sorts and various kinds of delicacies. and even down in the democratic parts of the city, such as M a ter 100 Road or Whitechapel, where on costers barrows they were retailing the hare necessities of life at the cheapest possible price, one would find a certain proportion of the stalls monopolised in exactly the same way by chocolates and. similar luxuries. “ I came across an amusing instance of this in a country district, too, ’ he paid. ‘‘l was walking in the fields about three or four miles out of Oxford with one of the leading economists in England, when on passing into a lane we saw a horse drawing a small float approaching. I naturally took it to be a dairyman on his rounds, and said as much to my companion, but he replied, 1 This is something for you to tell your friends in New Zealand about. ' It is a sign of economic conditions in "When it come up I saw that "it was an ice-cream barrow doing the round of the country villages on a Sunday ” “It was a strange thing,” stated Mr Atkinson, “ to arrive in the Old Country as I did at the end of March and find that the clocks were put forward an hour a night or two after T got. there, and that forty-five millions of people accepted the change without, the faintest hitch or inconvenience. The step was taken, of course, on account, of the coal strike, nnd people viewed the reversion to astronomical lime about October last, with equal complacency.,’ ’
