Jone« may make the trip to •Trerrfham for the approaching meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, in which case he will take Malaga and Ifiuripos. w. t V [ T. H. Gillett is booked for a trip to Trentham with Foo Chow and VolkoTo. The former has been very unlucky of late. f Mr Hugo Friedlander, who is gradually getting a team together, is the new owner of Nigh braider, who was ►old in Auckland during the recent meeting. Nightraider has l>een gelded, end after a spell he will join J. William son’3 stable.

Y The Wellington Racing Club hae secured a line list of nominations for ftlie summer meeting. All the event-3 have filled well, while quality is strongly in evidence. ) The enterprise of the Wellington Racing Club m making the Dmiro Cup the most valuable hack race in Now Zealand has been rewarded by a great response from owners. Forty-six nominations have been received. I* Menu in is a notable absentee from the set-weight races at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. Evidently the crack two-year-old is to have a rest, preparatory to taking on autumn engagements. i *** I' The North Island sportsman, Mr R. A. M'Kenzie, is having an unlucky run with his small team. Sunart and Jvilgour had to forfeit their Auckland engagements on account of leg troubles and Old Gold 1 went soro during the Manawatu meeting. As a result, all three are now on the easy list. \ *•* A Taranaki owner tided to purchase Vagabond recently, with a view to schooling him over hurdles, but the Martian gelding was not for sale. The Trentham trainer, J. W. Lowe, has a big team of two-year-olds, but fco far he has not won a race with any of them.

• Mr P. S. Easton has made a present of a youngster by Absurd from Princess Moutoa to Mr T. M. Wilford, M-P. He will race as Moutoa’a Gift. I Counter Attack having won the Eller- j she Handicap in easy style and in I good time on New Year’s Day, it seemed in every way justified that he should rule favourite for the Goodwood HanI clicap. run over a similar distance to j that in which be distinguished himself on the third day. The English-bred ; horse was not, however, in a galloping i mood on Monday, and the manner in which he went out of the contest three ; furlongs from home was of the x >r °- I nounced order. Counter Attack is 1 clearly not a reliable horse. If Gloaming still retains his championship titl . and a couple more events fell to him at the recent Summer Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. Jn the Islington Plate he won nicely from his stable companion Vespucci, but from the stand it looked as if his iask in the Auckland Plate was a little harder. Half way down the running , he appeared to be going easily alongside Gasbag, but the latter kept him at it, and the champion did not look to Kayo a great deal in hand at the finish. Esperance. who is a sister to Ardenbhor and Mascot, is somewhat unlucky. In her last six starts she lias run two firsts and lour seconds. She won the Horowher.ua Cup and the Ashhurst Cup, was second to Sunart at ■Woodville; second to Client in tho Manawatu Cup, second to Scornful in the Wairarapn. Cup and second to Matatua in the President’s Handicap at Xeuherenikau. The luck was with her at Levin and at Ashhurst, but at Awapnni and Tauherenikau it was decidedly against her. r Mews from Auckland state* that The Hawk was taken bad prior to the race for the Royal Stakes. and he could not be started. It will probably he necessary to spell the Martian i two-year-old. I Something like a record in snratchiings put tip at Stratford on New iYaar'e Day, when no f«w«r than beratt were out of their

engagements. This represents e big expense to owners, and the club would be doing those who have to pay a good turn if the talcing of acceptances at future meetings was deferred until after the Taranaki Christmas fixture.

SOUTHLAND NOTES. (Special to the ‘‘ Star.”) INVERCARGILL, January 7. The private trainer, A. I>. M’lvor, 13 making; preparations to take Mr TV. Stone’s horses, Eleus and Silver Peak, to the North Islaud to compete at the Wellington summer fixture. M’lvor goes north next week with his charges. Mr P- ITogan has entered Mandrake hi five out of the eight events at the Otautau Racing Club’s meeting. The missed events are the novice, the trotting race and the steeplechase. Following on her success in the Rosedale Handicap at tho Southland Racing Club's meeting Mantua will he turned out tor a spell. As the result of an accident some time ago the filly has been displaying signs of weakness, and had the public known that it was feared she would not stand up for the race referred to the would hardly have been backed on the totalisator fen* an amount which constitutes an investment record for Southland 'll connection with an individual competitor. Several of Hogan’s horses hare been entered at the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting, but their departure for the north may depend upon the weights allotted them. With profits something like £3200 as the result of the recent summer meeting, the officials of the Southland Racing Club are on good terms with themselves, and keen to continue the progressive policy that lias built up the local turf institution of late years into a powerful club. In presenting the trophy attached to the Invercargill Cup to the owner of the winner, tho president (\V. T. Haziett) hinted at the stake for that event being materially ino reaaed. The veteran performer, Rorke’s Drift, is expected to make his_ reappearance on the turf at tho Wairio Jockey Club’s and Otautau Racing Club's meetings.

It is reported that the connections of Downcast won a large amount of money when the first of the ‘stock of Adonis proved successful in the Victory Class Trot at Wyndham Racing Club’s fixture. The descendant of that great stud success, Thelma, is trained bv A. M'Leilan at Invercargill. The Otautau Racing Club has received very cucouraging entries for its amreal meeting, which takes place two days after ihe Wairio Jockey Club’s fixture, both clubs operating in. the same district

Mazama has lightened up as the result. of his five successful winning efforts at Wingatui, Wyndham and Invercargill, but a few days’ rest is expected to put him right again. He will probably be engaged in the Dunedin Gup its he stays well. i . During his stay here tne Riccarton mentor, G. Murray Aynsley, was approached to put a price on W arlove, but his answer was to the effect that the Martian mare was not for sale an present. Ilis winning effort m the Invercargill Cup appears to have improved Eleus, as the black gelding on Thursday morning, after performing liis daily task, pui in two unauthorised sprints at intervals, with his light-weight rider, the gallops being merely light-hearted displays of exuberance of spirits from winch" no ill effects resulted.

It is reported that W. Norman ha** finally decided to give up starting galloping races as far aa Southland clubs are concerned.

Local light harness experts were greatly taken with Air H. F. Niooll’s four-year-old mare Promenade, by Logan Pointer from Queen’s Drive, who won a race at the S.R.O. fixture. She was bred in Southland by Messrs Stevenson and M’Math and purchased at auction by the Avh burton sportsman for 47 guineas. The winner of the Oreti Harness Trot, who is a fine hold pacer, scored easily over the mile and a half in 3min 40 2-osec, finishing up tho incline to the straight as if she was prepared to go on over a more lengthy course.
