ROWING.
CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. Tha Canterbury .Rowing Association met last night; prosont,—Messrs F. D. Kcst.eveu (president); G. It. Hobbs and H. Leyton (Union). M. Evans and V. Hewer (Canterbury), A, C. Barr and K. G. Bailey (Sumner), Y r . Duggan and 0. Ebert (i'inmnil’ A. L, Stycbe and W. Sargison (Akaroa), J. H. Keelley (Cure), R. A. Nightingale and R. E. Nightingale (Avon). It was decided to send letters of thanks to the Akaroa Boatjng Club, Mr M. Kearney, captain of the club, and Mr G. Lelievre for assistance in regard to the storing oi boats at Akaroa. Regarding : request by the ■'association that willows which obstruct the view of the rowing course, should be removed, the City Council wrote slating that there wore no funds for tho purpose this year. Nevertheless, the rowers were promised further consideration of tho matter. on tho Akaroa regatta, Mr Nightingale, tho association's representative, said that the course was still ridiculous. The boats finished much too far off the shore. It was almost impossible to see from tho shore who won a lace. If tho regattawere (o be continued die races must, bo popularised by bringing them close up to the public. Officials at Die regatta had complained of the absence of an excursion boat. There certainly was a wed of such a boat, for the regatta suffered very considerably by the lack of attendance.
The president concurred with Mr Nightingale's remarks. The course was laid off at the most awful angle, though he did not doubt, that it was quite correct. An anomaly in the Wellington rowing regatta programme was pointed out by Mr* F. D. Keslevcn. He said that, at the lop of the column showing the amounts awarded for the races was printed “ donations,” whereas at tho bottom there was printed “ total prim money, £140." Thus the rule providing against prize money being given was slighted. Mr Duggan uaid that the rule, was purely a, formality to qualify crews for -racing in Australia. There seemed to be many people who still believed that the crews received the money give.u for races, however. It should be. made plain that, (he "donations" went lo the clubs, not the crews.
The programme of ;ho Kaiapoi regatta was approved, with the proviso that only Ibroe boats should cuter in a race at one time.
Mr Nightingale complained of the arrangements for umpiring and judging at the last Kaiapoi regatta It was decided to request the regatta committee to erect a proper sighting line, and to provide « motor boat for the-umpire.
