CHANGES AND PROMOTIONS

[Per Press Association.]

WELLINGTON, November 29.

Tho Minister of Justice announces that the following changes and promotions in the Police Force ere proposed:— Tho Superintendent at Wellington is to hare his jurisdiction extended (for certain purposes) to include also the districts of Napier, Palmerston North, Wanganui and New Plymouth.'

The Superintendent at Auckland is to have his jurisdiction similarly extended to include also the districts of Whangaroi, Hamilton and Gisborne.

Tho Superintendent at Christchurch is to have his jurisdiction extended to include also the Timaru end Groyim.mth districts. The Superintendent at Dunedin is to have his jurisdiction extended' to include also tho Invercargill district. These arrangements will not In any way limit tho duties and responsibilities of ,tho officers in charge of these district*, but will rather extend the supervision and duties of tho four Superintendents who, up to this time, have acted only as officers in charge of their own areas.

It is proposed to make the following promotions;—

&üb-Inspector Dew. Christchurch, to tie promoted to tho rank of Inspector in charge of •■he Christchurch district, under the immediate supervision of Dio Superintendent. Sub-Inspector Matlicson, now Sub-Inspector at Dunedin,- to bo promoted to the rank of Inspector, and to take charge of the Greymouth district on January 1, in succession to Inspector Cntickahank, who is liking his leave prior to retirement on superannuation.

Senior-Sergeant MacNnmara, of Wellington South Station, to temporarily fill the vacant position of Senior-Sergeant at the Central Station, Wellington Sergeant Lcw'm, of Gore, to bo promoted Senior-Sergeant, and io be transferred to Dunedin, to take up the position now held by Senior-Sergeant Murray. Detective-Sergeant Rawle, of Gvaymouth, to be promoted Senior-Sergeant (uniform branch), and transferred to the Chief Police Station at Auckland, to take over the duties of SeniorSergeant Bales. (Special io “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, November 30.

It is officially explained that changes in the police staff re-arrangements are being made, principally in consequence of the evcr-iucreas-ing correspondence work thrown upon the chief officers. The result has been that they have been withdrawn more than is desirable from their outside work of supervision and inspection. The inspectors at Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch will now assume immediate charge of these districts, and their administration will ho confined principally to attention to the correspondence side of their duties. This will enable superintendents to pay special attention to outside duties. It is hoped that greater efficiency and better discipline will be promoted by these changes. The districts being now smaller, it will bo possible for every inspector throughout the Dominion to pay more attention to outside duties, which, especially during the last four or five years of the war. have to some cStent been unduly overlooked, owing to the pressure of inside office duties. These inspectors will now have the advantage of superintendents, .with whom to confer.
