THE COAL SHORTAGE.
Goal shortage is still a problem throughout Canterbury. After a trip through Ashburton, Tonnilta, Geraldine, Makikihi and Waimate, Mr W. J. Jenkin, president of the Canterbury Industrial Association, says that industries in those districts aro in practically the same position as industries around Christchurch. Ten days’ supply is in most cases the 'largest reserve, and many linns are carrying on in hand-to-mouth fashion. Timaru is slightly better off than Christchurch, because direct supplies of lignite coal arc coining through from the Linton-Wairio mine, but the gasworks are very short. The greatest trouble is in supplying traction engines used on road haulage. Mr Jenkin met o’no merchant who had received a tmli of coal for household distribution. The merchant came in contact with a farmer whose ploughing operations were held up through lack of ooal. Ho therefore diverted the whole truck load, saying that the wheat crop was more important than a few household fires.
