COUNTY COUNCILS.
WAIMAIRI. The Waimairi County Council mot last evening; present—Messrs W. P Spencer (chairman) P. Sisson, W. J. Walter, G. E. Curry C. W. Hervey, S. A. Staples, J. delland, J, A. Uren and C, E. Cross. The Lighting Committee’s report, which was adopted, recommended that all consumers should bo charged for alterations carried out by the council the minimum charge to bo 2s, a and all extra time to be charged; meters to be read every two months, commencing from November; the purchase of meters to be left in the hands of the chairman and electrical foreman. It was pror. „ oa " a meeting in the Harowood i\oad Hall for October 28 to consider the electrical lighting of the Harewood area. The committee further recommended that the foreman should erect a transformer in the council yard, but on it being ascertained from the engineer that the cost would no about £2OOO, the council resolved to hold tho work over in tho meantime The engineer, in tho course of his report, stated that the Seafield Syndicate wished the sanction of the council to form a road through its property, tho syndicate paying the cost, j J i council to ?'*t two or throe yards of shinglo to the chain to enable motor-cars to travel along it. Tho length of this portion of tho road was 110 chains. The path on Shirley Road had been pegged out, and it was intended to start forming it as soon ns Lake Terrace Hoad was finished. Arising out of the engineer's report, it was decided to pay half wages to the council’s workmen when sick and when not drawing accident pay. It was decided to grant tho Seafield Syndicate permission to form tho road, and to inform it that tho council had no shingle to spare at present. A somewhat lengthy discussion took place on the suggested sale of the council’s property in Clyde Road. It was decided to take no action in tho matter till tho new council nad been elected. A deputation of ratepayers from Hawthorne Road waited upon the council and asked that tho formation of that road, between Nursery and Papanui Roads, should be proceeded with, as at present there were no side-channels and nowhere to drain tho adjacent sections. The engineer was instructed to report on the matter to tho next meeting of the council. A deputation from the Belfast Progressive Association, consisting of Messrs I'. Hansen, C. Prykc and W. A. Nicholls, waited upon the council to ask its assistance in carrying out certain improvements which were stated to be urgently needed. It was said that there had boeu a great many cases of sickness in Belfast, and tho residents believed they wero due to the unsatisfactorv state of tho drains in and around the township. The deputation 'asked that aoiuo means should be found to flush the drains, sny three times a week. The Styx crossing and an extension of tho Styx bridge were mentioned as dangerous places which also needed attention. The association also asked for a grant from tho council It was pointed mil that the council had recently granted £SO to the Canterbury Progress League. After tho deputation had withdrawn, the various matters brought forward by it were discussed. With reference to the drains in Belfast the engineer was instructed to inspect them and report. Regarding tho request for a grant, it was suggested that the association should approach the Canterbury Progress League. A complaint regarding tho lighting near the Styx bridge was referred to the Lighting Committee. Other matters mentioned by the deputation wero held over for fuijtner consideration. A complaint from the Burwood Burgesses’ Association regarding the condition of tho Burwood bridge, opposite Berry’s was referred to the Tramway Board. Accounts amounting to £2214 Its 9d wore i passed for payment.
