Shortage of cement continues to interfere with building operations in Canterbury. According to the chairman of the Board of Trade (Mr W. G. M’Douald), while the works, at Mil--burn, in Otago, are engaged at fulf capacity, the North Island works are severely handicapped by a shortage of coal, a factor that is also restricting die output ot bneivs. Shippings delays are interfering with the transport of timber from the West Coast to Lyttelton, but efforts are being made to improve matters. The enforcement of the new building permit regulations has so far led to little increase in the number of houses under construction.
