SHAMROCK’S SAILS.
. TALE OF A RACING BLUNDER. Alembers of the. crew of •'Shamrock JV. who have returned homo hadstories to tell. “The best w;as not obtained out of Shamrock FVsaid one member, “ but that was not the’fault- of the crew. 'The Hcsolute carried much lighter- canvas, and was able to set the. whole of. the Rails in the time taken by Shamrock's men to haul up the main jialyard. “The most unfortunate' part of the business was that on the return to City Island after the races a much lighter set of racing canvas for the challenger was tound stowed away in Jacobs’ A'arcl. If rimy had found the lighter sails before it would have made a tremendous difference. " Resolute had ton mainsails, from which to choose, and the one to he used was not bent until the morning of the race. If the, winds ivere light, as they were, on most occasions, she had a sail not much heavier than a bed-sheet. " “The result was that when a light air was nicely filling Resolute sails, the heavy canvas of the-challenger was hanging Tn folds, which were ton stiff and heavy to utilise the, breeze.”
