It is suspected that the Madras mail was wrecked by discontented coolies, who previously had been dismissed. Five carriages were telescoped. . No Europeans wore killed. Over thirteen Indians wore killed and many woundedEuropean passengers rendered first aid with scarves and handkerchiefs. The disaster occurred at eleven at night. Fires were lit alongside the wreckage to help the rescuers.
