OPENING Of THE SEASON,
THIS AFTERNOON’S CEREMONIES.
The bowling season was opened this afternoon by most of the city and suburban clubs. The weather, wos threatening in (lift morning, but cleaved beautifully during tbs day, and tho ceremonies were performed under the pleasantest auspices. CANTERBURY CLUB. There, wail a large attendance u( members and visitors at the Canterbury Club’s green. Tho. ceremony was performed by Mr O. C. Cox (president), who expressed hopes for an enjoyable season. He specially welcomed lady visitor's, who, hs said, always gave a touch of brightness to (he green. 11 v explained that it, is intended to entertain ladies more frequently in the new club room. Tho membership of the dub, ho added, had passed the century, mark, and the club room, an far as members wore concerned, was the strongest in Canterbury. Mrs Co;: sent tho first bitty across, the green, and bowled tho first bowl, amidst applause. ST ALBANS. There was a. Urge gathering of bowlers and their friends when Mr J. De. Feu opened,tho 6l Albans Club’s new season. He expressed lbs committee's pleasure at; so large, air attendance, and wished the members every success, social and sporting. He welcomed the new membars and hoped their association with the club would be happy. Several old members had removed from Christchurch, blit there was every prospect of.a successful .season. All would regret to learn'that ilk ness prevented th® attendance on that day! o* their old champion, Mr R. J. 'Thompson, and alb would wish him a, speedy restoration to, health. After complimenting the greenkeeper, Mr M’Nab, on the results ot his effort?, Mr Do Pen declared the green, open (or play. Mrs De Feu bowled the first ball,after which * series of rink games between president's and vice-president's teams took place, afternoon tea. being; served during tlicj interval. . -LINWOOD GREEN. The opening of the Linwood Bowling ana Croquet Club’s season took place this afternoon. " The 'green was in good, order,, despite tho recent wet weather, this being due largely lb the efforts of tho green-keeper, Mr J. Coffey, and the superintendent, Mr E. Burson. There was a bright display of bunting, and a good attendance of members and visitors. During the afternoon music was provided by Mr A. A. Bickegton and bis orchestra.' •A’welcome to the visitors was voiced by the president (Mr G. Cooper). Ho expressed a hope that the season would be a successful one, and thanked Mr Rickcrton and his associates foi ’ volunteering their, services. Airs Cooper then rolled up the jack, and the sea-, son opened. , KAIAPOI CLUB. The Kai»poi Bowling and Croquet Club opened its season this afternoon. There was a large number of members and, others present; The president (Dr J. H. Crawshnw) extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and expressed a hope that the coming season wou,ld be a successful one. He thanked.ths ladies for their assistance to the ilub. The green was in excellent order, to a considerable extent due to the efforts of Messrs D. Gibson and ft. O. Butcher. Mrs Butcher rolled up the first jack, and the season was declared open. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB. Thera was .a large attendance at the Christchurch ‘Bowling Club’s green this afternoon, when ihe season was opened. Members mustered in strong force and representatives were also present from, a number of other clubs.
Mr F. O. Hobbs, the president, in declaring the season open, referred to the good work that had been done during the winter by the green superintendent (Mr G. Mazey), the result being that the green was in excellent order. Ha also paid a tribute to the secretary (Mr C. D. Hardie), who had everything trim for a successful season. He hoped that tho members would work'together and make it one of the best seasons in the club’s history. Mr Hobbs read a telegram containing good wishes from a'.past president,, Mr E. E. Daniels, now a resident of Auckland, also a letter from Dr L. S. Manning, offering a prize for competition
Cheers were given for Dr Manning, on the call of Mr Hobbs, who then declared the season open, the first bowl being, sent down by Mias Hobbs. ’.Chose present afterwards took part ip n game between sides arranged by tbs committee.
BDCrEWARE CLUB. The 1920-21. season' in connection with the Edgeware Bowling and Croquet Chib was officially opened to-day by the club president. Mr Charles Saacand, a large gathering of bowlers, croquet players and their friends being present. ' In declaring the season open Mr Bascand briefly traced the history of the club, which he saul, was formed by a few enthusiasts in the district, and had steadily grown till it was now one of the leading clubs in the Uuiatchurch Centre, with a green second to none in Ohnstchurfcli.
T Horton, wife of the vice-president of the club then rolled up the kitty, and Mrs Bascand trundled the first-bowl, the season then being declared open. Club’s season Mr Bascand said that croquet was one of the most sociable-of games.
