SURF CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. The attednnce at the Surf Club annual meeting, hold in the pavilion last Monday, was largo and enthusiastic, and much keenness was displayed. A good deal of criticism was levelled 1 at tho senior members for their lack of reel practice work. Mr F. D. Stokes and others, on behalf of the senior members, made spirited replies. Mr Stokes said that the so-called “ oldtimers ” had taken a prominent part in every rescue of note during; the past few years. - The annual “chestnut.” in the shape of outstanding subscriptions, of which there are _ ’seventy, elicited keen debate. “This is the same old bogey year after year,” said one. member. “ Head out the names, Mr Chairman. It is absolutely disgusting that m a elnb.like this a. .man cannot pay aUs subscription. Ido not blame the . oflicers, but something will have to be done.” , Subsequently Mr Knox, the treasurer, explained the difficulties, and it was decided to take steps to eliminate the outstanding item for. the future. ”As soon as a club .becomes financlaLit is doomed,” said ’a speaker in criticising the motion to increase subscriptions, and enlarge the finances.

The dub. seems to be in a quandary as to how best to record the names of those who served in the war. In reply to many questions, officers said that the Roll of Honour was not shelved, but that great difficulty had been experienced in obtaining a true record of all dub members who served. The members, however, at the annual meeting would not hear of a change. , In making a, presentation of a silvermounted pencil case to Air L- C. .Matson, the newly-elected captain of the New Brighton Surf Club. .l\fr Knox said that tho recipient had had his name entered on the Millar Cup, the Sumner CuvAand i he Matson Cup. Mr Matson suitably replied. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB.

Tho sixth annual smoke concert and presentation of prir.es was held in the club’s rooms on Tuesday evening. Captain A. \V. (Fries (vice-president) occupied the chair. Items were given by Messrs AV. R. Gooko, 0. Bnrmeister 0. Hemploman, W. Herrick, AV. Cook,’ jnn., G. Catton, H Osment and Captain Owles. Captain Owles, who has heen connected with the club since its inception, presented the prizes and congratulated the various winners- He intimated that heArnold give a, silver cup to be bred for as tho committee thought fit, Iliis cup was to be known as the O'yles Cup. He also donated “bs towards the new rifle funds..: Air A- P; Hopkins, a vice-president, donated 21s towards the same fund. The following were the prize-winners Mr A- G. Muuns secured the Jones championship cup and the gold medal which goes with it. Air T. Hobbs secured the grand aggregate .prizes. The winners of other ’competitions were ARssrs U. 'V • Bishop. H. Osment. F. FanIham, IT. Hawker, A. G. Aluims 0 tbitoii,, F Clarke/ J. Hayes and T. Hobbs. Among the toasts that were iionoured were “The Donors of Prizes ” proposed by Air AV. Elson, and was responded to by Captain Owles.

SOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES. The monthly meeting of-the South brighten Progress League was held on Incsday evening. There was a fair attendance-of members. With regard to the South Brighton loiter has been received from'the Tramway 'Board stating that it is unablo at tho present, time to give any intimation as to when tho work will, be put in hand. In view of the difficulty of securing suitable accommodation for the meetings of the Progress league, it . was derided to approach the Education Board, asking for permission to use the school building in Jellicoe Street. ' THE CRICKET GROUND. • The council have effected great improvement to the Soprts Ground- The
