OBITUARY.

THOMAS BROWN. A cable message received yesterday announced the death in Svdney of Mr Thomas Brown, of the firm of Thomas Brown, Ltd., of Christchurch. Mr Brown, who was born in Scotland sixtyeight years ago, came out to New Zealand about 1880. He was engaged in the shipping and coal business on the "West Const - for some time, with the firm of Martin Kennedy, and afterwards with the Westport Coal Company, from which office he was transferred to the management of the Christchurch branch of the business over twenty years ago. Some years afterwards he went into the textile trade, but eventually returned to the coal business, and established the present firm of Thomas Brown, Ltd. He was of n retiring disposition, and took no active part in public affairs. Mr Brown was in good health when ho left Christchurch a fortnight ago on his usual trip to Sydney. He leaves a widow and one daughter—Dr Edith Pitts, of Waimate.
