Her daughter has gone into ! the Karifcan© Hospital at Cashmere, to ', study nursing. Mrs E. C. Levrey and her daughter are visiting iKmedm, where Mrs Lov- ' voy is a Magistrate. Mrs LeVvev intends, staying in Christchurch until the , end of this year, as her daughter is at school in this city. Mrs A. Swanston gave a jolly little party on Monday evening in the Oddfellows! Hall,. St Asaph Street, the occasion being the twenty-first birthday of her .daughter, Thelma, There wero about eighty persons present, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Dancing occupied most "of the evening, and a dainty supper was served in'tho side-room. Among those present were: —Mr,and Mrs Herrick, Mr and Mrs W. Swanston, Mrs Shave, Misses I. and 0. Spence, F. Bullen, T. Thompson, D. Colgau, D. and M. Bridgeman, A. Jaques, M'. Hobbs, D. Philpotfc and B. Rydings, and Messrs B."Pauli, A. Osmond, Fater (2), T. Smith, H. Coles, 1/, Davie, W. Hums, E. Welsh, H. Cummings, H. Roskilly and W. lan.TheLyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade's forthy-sixth annual social and dance was held in the Excelsior Hall, Lyttelton last evening. There were about seventy couples on the floor. Visitors included . Superintendent Warner (Christchurch), Superintendent Tyler (Rangiora), and representatives from the Kaiapoi, Akaroa, Sumner, New ■ Brighton, Adduigton, Christchurch Railway, City and Woolston brigades. During the evening the Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) made the presentation of medals and bars for long service. The recipients were Captain W. G. Carson (17 years' service, 6th bar), Lieut. Walkhn (15 years', sth bar), Firemen T. Newton (23 years', Oth bar). G. Lester (7 years', Ist bar), J. H. Jones (7 years , Ist bar), J. Crocker (7 years', * Ist bar), and H. Lublow (5 years' medal). The dance was one of the 'most buccessful held for a number of years. The Christchurch Gas Company's first annual dance was held in the Art Gallery on September 1, and proved a most , successful and enjoyable function. The decorations were in gold and white, with baskets of greenery and yellow llowers hanging from the roof. The lounge was decorated with palms, and the supper-tables with spring flowers. The committee comprised Mis«es M. Bennett, B. Bell, G. Blazey and M. Sweeney, and Messrs J. P. Flood, IX Bowles, W. Cowlin, M'Jienzie and F. Hanhain. The secretaries were Messrs J. M'Dougall and J. M'Lean, and the chaperones were Mesdames R. C. Bishop, R. English and J. J. Hurley. Among those present were:—Misses Blazey, Stephenson, Hastings, Sharman, Weir, Sutherland, Callon, Bills, Rcmd, Jennings, -Newton, Dixen; Bates, Smith, Jackson, Spence, Chapman, Archibold, M'Donald and Clark, , Mesdames Do la Cour, Oakes (2), Olliver and Stevens, and Messrs R. C. Bishop, 0- J. Hurley, Byers, De la Cour, Pitcaithly (2), Raw, Dunn, Sycamore, Forest, Bennett, Archibold, Best, Oakes (3/, OUiver, ;L. Robinson, Cadenhead (2), Pv. Boag. Beach, Pegg, Richards and Anderson. New stocks of French and English Face Powders, including some exquisite new varieties, have reached Mr E. Camoron Smith, 96, Worcester Street. They.include the famous Bourjois toilet specialties, which comprise the following novelties:—Manon Lescaut Muguet and Rose Revie.
