EISHEE MEN’S NEEDS. [Enou Obit Correspondent.]
WELLINGTON, September 1. The requirements of Kaikoura fishermen, who desire a safer harbour for their launches, were .represented to the Minister of Marino to-day. by a. deputation of fishermen, headed .by .Mr J. A. Johnson and accompanied by Messrs iforbes, Howard, M’Gombs and Sullivan. They stated that twenty-six boats are employed in the industry, and that tour, hare been wrecked this year owing to inadequate protection from tho ire a-, ther. Mr Howard, who had visited Kaikoura as a member of the Soldiers’ Repatriation ’ Committee, said-ho„ held a
strong opinion that something ought to be done, and it did not appear a difficult matter to provide shelter. Mr Sullivan supported the requests in the interest of a good fish supply for Christchurch. Sir 'William Herries stated that authority had been given to spend £IOOO immediately to provide a slipway and clear the rocks. This would relieve imj mediate necessities, but Public . Works engineers estimated the cost of the breakwater scheme to be £IO,OOO. Asmaller scheme providing a low-tide wall would cost £2500, but the Department was unable to provide the whole of the money. He would look for a contribution from the local authority, and was prepared to pay pound for pound subsidy up to £SOOO. • T’isbermeu present' expressed approval of the expenditure of £IOOO and willingness to contribute towards interest and sinking fund of the „ larger scheme by paying mooring fees. They undertook to approach the- County Council, which is also the harbour authority, with,a view to securing its • assistance.
