CITY BY-ELECTION.
MR F. R. COOKE RETURNED. Mr F. E. Cooke, tlie official Labour candidate. has been elected to fill the vacancy on tho Christchurch City Council, caused by the residuation of Mr L. Peck, one of the councillors representing the Sydenham Ward. The poll took place yesterday when 1448 rotes mere recorded, about half the number cast in the ward at the last full council election. Boon • , . 58s) Informal . . .id In returning thanks at the central polling booth after the declaration had been posted up, Mr Cooke said that the Labour 'Party wbuld now hare seven members on the Citv Council. a« against nine for the other side. He felt certain that, at the next ordinary election the Labour Party would secure a clear majority, and that it. would be able to fight those people on the council who were working to making Christchurch worse. Mew Zealand had started off by being a working man s country. During recent rears an'effort had Ijeeii -made‘to foist an aristocracy on to the country and to reduce the working ma n to the level of the working man in England. The Labour Party was going to frustrate that effort. It was out to fight pronteenug and to improve social conditions and it, should have the support ot every thinking man.
