At tho meeting of the AshJjurton branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday a letter was rend from the General Manager of Railways to the effect that tho further request for the reinstatement of the early train between Ashburton and fihristehurch would be .sympathetically considered when the summer timetable was under review. Mr Lill stated that when lie was in ‘Wellington ho had had a long o, inference with the General Manager on the question. Tho Manager had informed him that owing to the shortage of coal, and particularly the shortage of men, it was utterly impossible to reinstate the’train at ; present.
