SUMNER RIPPLES.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK, [From Ock Correspondent.'] THE WAII MEMORIAL. Tho Vvar Memorial Committee met again this week to consider proposals submitted by Mr H. J. Marrinor. Those consisted of an ornamental cross some twenty Lot high, and a. jiiece of statuary typical of the part New Zealand played in the groat war. The former was estimated to cost £6OO complete, and the latter upwards of £’•1000. The statuary was viewed with the greater favour, the designs submitted appealing strongly to most, ot those present. ’While it was agreed that the borough of Sumner ought to have no difficulty in finding the money, it was .seriously questioned whether jmblio subscriptions would he substantial enough to total the amount required. A full discussion of the proposals resulted in points beisg raised of such importance that they were left until another meeting, a. sub-commit-tee, being set up to deal fully with the j matter. The Mayor (tho Hon .T. Ban - , t M.L.C.) heartily thanked Mr Marriner | for the trouble he had gone to in gel- | ting details of the proposals. t FOR THE CHILDREN. | Tire elocutionary entertainment | which was given by Miss Eldred’s pu- | pils proved a very enjoyable function. SHIFTING SAND. The heavy easterly seas have given the north sand spit another battering, .with the result that the sandhills appear to be again eroded rather heavily. The question of silting on the Clifton Esplanade was before the council this week, hut the general opinion of qualified residents pointed to the fact that nature seemed to have a. Wav oi remedying these matters in due course, and the matter was not further discussed.

BOEOUGH IM PRO VEMENTg. A thorough examination of the council reserve at Scarborough, on the east side of the creek, is to be- made by the sub-committee of councillors ujho it ill report on the advisability or otherwise of converting a portion into a. small stand for visitors’ motor-cars at the week-end. At present these . are “packed” beneath the cliffs, where they -congest the traffic and are . a menace to public safety, i The filling in of tho Scarborough drain by amusement seekers who seem to enjoy pitching in big boulders has now gone far enough, and the council , is taking steps to remedy a very oh--3 jectionablo form of entertainment by visitors.
