PRICE OF BREAD.
♦“ BAKERS SEEK INCREASE. (Special to tho “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, Juno 20. Representatives of tho Master Bakers waited oh tho president of tho Board of Trade to-day with a view to proving tho need for increases in tho prices fixed three months ago. Tho increases, which were suggested on the basis of tho 2lb loaf, were $d over the counter, and Jd delivered, in tho North Island, and Jd, all round in tho South Island. It was explained than tho cost of manufacture had gone up at least 17a 6d a ton, and the position, so far as the bakers were ' concerned, was going from bad to worse. Tho South Island men were said to be in a slightly better position regarding flour, than the North Island. The Minister, the Hon E. P. Leo, said it was useless for him to give an immediate answer. Ho must go fully into the details placed before him, and endeavour to arrive at a decision which would be fair to the bakers and the consumers. A definite answer would be given speedily.
