There is said to be a number of men in the city who arc peeping themselves in funds by the practice of soliciting from returned soldiers. One returned man states that he has ceased to wear his association badge, as it made him a mark for these men.' On three occasions during this week he has been accosted in the street .by men who nosed as returned soldiers “down ou their luck,'’ and who Imaged the loan of small sums. One man" 1 stated that he had served in the Australian forces, and produced some papers in connection with a. gratuity which on account of his change of address had not been forwarded to him. He would have, been pleased to receive "n shilling to cfti hair-cut.” The “ Digger/’ however, ttas not* satistied that the man's chances of obtaining the gratuity was sufficient security for the advance. The monthly meeting of the Sumner Pro«hytonan Church was held last evening the Rev M’Ara, presiding over a full attendance. Correspondence was read from tho secretary of the Girls’ Bible Class Camp expressing thanks for the use of the church for meetings m connection with the coming b.astcr Camp. T t , w?» unanimously agreed that a letter of condolence should be gent to the widow and family of the late Mr W A. M. Mnsgrove. _ The Rev M’Ara reported that the communicants’ class had been well attended and that twcnfy-ouo new member* had joined the church at the last communion. It was also ropoitod that the last « minimion was the largest yet held in tho church, and that the recent anniversary services _ had been a great success. The" treasurer's statement showed a credit balance in all accounts and was considered very satis* factory.
