INTERPROVINCIAL MATCH.
OTAGO V. CANTERBURY.
Glorious weather favoured the opening day of the interprovincial match between Otago and Canterbury. The’ previous day's rain had freshened up the Hagley Park ground considerably, and a good wicket bad been prepared. D. Reese captained the home team, and A. Galland. was captain of the visiting team. Kcose lost the loss, and Canterbury took the field. There was only a moderate attendance nl the start of play. , The teams were as follow;
Otago—A. W. Alloo, "Westbrook, T. M’Farlane, R, Torrancs, A. Eekhold, ,1. M. Smith, M’Mullen, Hutchison, C. Chadwick, Barron and A. Galland (captain). Canterbury—D. Reese (.captain). R. C. Blunt, K. D. Worker, E. BVosnnhan, H. Watson, J. M’Ev.in, A. W. Thomas, H. M. • aylor, R. Read, D. M'K. Sandman and W. Hayes. Twelfth man—C. E. Evans. c OTACIC BATS. Westbrook and Eekhold were Otago's opening batsmen, the latter taking strike to Rood. Eekhold snicked the first ball past the. slips for two and the next turned to square leg for another couple. The lest ball of the error he chopped for a single, and Sandman look up tho bowling at the Riecarton Road end, and Eekhold could not got on to the St Alban? bowler, and a. maiden resulted. With the.fourth ball of his next, over Read scattered Westbrook's stumps.—s—l—o. ■!. Smith was next, and plnvcd. cut the over. .Eekhold treated Sandman's next ever with quiet respect, and again it was a maiden. Smith brought ton up with a nice square cut off Sandman. Thu, first ball of Read's fourth evor bowled Eekhold—l2—26 —and M’Mullun. wont in. Flay became very slow, an occasional single relieving tho monotony. M'Mullan, who is of tho stonewalling type, after scratching to Road went forward to block one, and was bowled—l?— 3—3. Read's average now was three wickets for 9 run.;. Macfarlano, was next, and showed a disposition to hit out at Sandman, but many well intentioned shots missed. Smith, who had been quiet for a time, was beaten by Read with a ball that kept low—23—l—9. Sandman, so far unsuccessful in securing a wicket had pent down seven overs for, 12 runs. Macfarfano etonped for a long time with a couple to his credit, but presently he opened out at Read, landed n sixer over tho long-on boundary, bringing 30 up. -Alloo followed with a quartette to the leg boundary .and play became livelier. ■Scores;— OTAGO.
