SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
SYDENHAM. Tho monthly meeting of the Sydenham School Committee was hold on Wednesday evening, there being present Mr ,E, L. M'Keou (chairman), Mrs Kiselev, Messrs J. R. Duncan, J. Butterfield, 11. J. Duncan, G. P. Taylor and A. 0. thicker. The. bead master reported that the average attendance for the month had been: Boys 440 and girls 430. The average attendance for the lirr-t week had been close on 80 per cent. On the rcoinmendation of the committee, the board have appointed Misses D. Blythe, D. Irvine and 1. Kennedy to act as relieving assistants to th_e school. Misses M. O’Farrell and is'. Hooker having resigned, it was decided to ask the board to advertise for two to replace them, and another one. Owing to influenza, it was decided to hold tho proposed picnic in abeyance. Accounts amounting to £~ 15s id woro passed for payment. Mesdames A. Riseloy and S. Willoughby and Mr 'J. Butterfield were appointed a visiting committee for tho ensuing month. It was decided to ask tho Education Board to change tho cast boundary of the school district to Barbadocs Street. It was decided to acknowledge tho extra work done by tho caretaker during tho Christmas holidays.
OP AW A. The monthly meeting o: the Cpawa. School Committee was held on Tuesday, there being present Messrs R. 11. Turner (chairman), T. W. West, W. Trist, -T. Pycroft, J. Butler. J. Farrar, F. Adams mid J. I-', Scott. The head master's report was as follows ■.—Admitted. boys 16, girls M; left, boys 11, girls 20. The number on the roll is IS3 boys, 135 curls, total 378, and the average attendance 1(5 boys, 177 girls, total 352. The picnic was to be held on February 13, but owing to tbo school being closed on account of the influenza epidemic, it was decided to postpone ft indefinitely. The Works Committee wore instructed to get several repairs done. The new alto has been purchased by the Education Board, and plans for the now school have boon prepared. Tenders will be called ior the new scnool at an early date.
WHARENUI. At the monthly meeting of the Wharenui Scnool Committee on Wednesday evening, there wore present; Messrs T. Haboriieid (chairman). M’Lean, Boyd, Wilson, Bates, Staples and Singleton (secretary). Leave of absence was granted to Meadames White and Stanton. The head master reported that about forty pupils from the senior standards had left at the end of the year, and that nearly as many new pupils had already been enrolled. The 101 l number for the first week was 893. In reference to the complaint concerning the late dismissal of certain standards, he pointed out that the board's regulations permitted hali-an-hour’s detention, and this rule was being observed. To do away with the teachers’ power to detain pupils would bo & blow to discipline, and put the school on a different footing from other schools. It was decided to inform the head master that the committee will'bo quite satisfied if the regulations are observed.
