IN FITZGERALD AVENUE.

MOTOR-CYCLISTS’ HAAROW ESCAPE.

A motor collision of a. most peculiar nature occurred this morning at the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and the Ferry Hoad. Messrs Res.tieaux and Kirkpatrick, who are engaged in a grocery business at the corner of Nursery Road and Tuam Street, Linwood,

were travelling round the. suburb in a * motor-cycle with side-car. collecting orders. They were proceeding southwards along Fitzgerald Avenue on the I,inwood side, and ha-d almost reached the Ferry Hoad crossing when they could hear a motor-car approaching at a high rate of speed from the direction of .Sumner. In order to give the mo tor 1 ear room, the driver of the evelc

deeming it inadvisable to go straight ahead, curved round to the roadway on the opposite side of the avenue. However. it is stated the driver of tho motor-car. did not take advantage of the fairway afforded him. and tbo big motor-ear followed up the cycle and collided with-it in the rear, bending tho chassis and damaging tho wheel of tho side-chair. The occupants of the motorcycle had a very narrow escape, being hut-led along within a few inches of an iron tramway post. Then followed the most- extraordinary part, of the occurrence. The- motor cyclists with the other assisted to push the motor-car back from its position among the trees, but as soon as it. was moved, the car, which turned out to he in reverse gear, immediately described a circle and smashed once again into the motorcycle, almost thoroughly completing its wreckage. Hi this further manoeuvre a municipal sign-post was carried a wav, tho protecting iron feme around a young tree received a blow which the circle and another tree lost some of its bark. There were throe ladies in the motor-car, but fortunately none of the parties to the collision received any injury. The driver of the motor-car, a Sumner resident, stated that his steering gear had gone wrong. He had the motor-cycle sent to his garage for repairs.
