THE PLUNKET SHIELD.
It is unfortunate that the match for tho Phinket Shield, the premier trophy in New Zealand cricket, was interrupted yesterday by tho intrusion of very unseasonable weather. The visit of the Wellington team is a welcome event, and if they manage to take the Shield away with them no one will begrudge them their win. It will be remembered that last year tho Wellington Association sent a team to Christchurch which secured the Shield after an exciting match. A week or two later, however, the Canterbury’ team went to Wellington, and regained the trophy after a most decisive victory. It is recognised in sporting and athletic circles that it is a good tiling for a trophy to travel. If one district retains it too long the aim of the donor, which is to encourage sport all over the country, is' liable to bo defeated. Canterbury cricketers cannot complain of the period of their tenure as far as the Plunket Shield is concerned. Naturally they are determined to defend possession, and there is no sportsman who would have it otherwise.
