RETURNING-OFFICER'S DEATH.
MR W. H. RHODES, OF AMBERLEY. DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS Hr V\. H. Rhodes, a very old and liig;lilv respected resident of Amberloy. died this morning, after a short illness. Mr Rhodes was returning officer for the Ellesmere district, but owing to the fact that he had been ill for some! time he had not been actively engaged on the duties of that office. Hr Rhodes was in business as a, general storekeeper and grain merchant in Amherley. He established his business in 18%, ami (xmdncted extensive operations in general farm produce. Ho was horn in IBOL at Lyttelton, and accompanied his father, the late Mr Alfred Rhodes, in 18f>7, to Leith field, where he was brought up to country life. In 1 &GR he ioined Messrs Bean and Co.. in Amherley. and when the (inn relinquished business in 1890, Mr Rhodes took over the produce branch, winch ho had since conducted. Mr Rhodes took n general interest in matters affecting the welfare of his district. He was a. member of various local organisations and bodies, and took an active part in public affairs.
