TO-DAY’S SITTINGS. CHRISTCHURCH. Mr S. E. M’Carthy. S.M., presided over to-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. THEFT. Cyril Lewis Withell, a youth of eighteen, who appeared on remand, pleaded guilty to the theft at Wellirigtdh on July 22 of £lO 10s in money and a. pair of kid gloves, the property of Sidney Williams. Tho accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, to report ‘to the police at Cheviot onco a mouth, and to refund tho money at the rate of £1 a month. A BAG OF SUGAR. ‘‘Unfortunately the offence of pillaging on railways and wharves is too common. It is useless fining these men because tbo offence goes on all the same. lam very sorry that a sense of public duty compels me to send this man to gaol, but duty must bo done. Cargp on railways and steamers must bo respected, and people must be made to understand tho seriousness of pillaging. You will bo convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.” In these words Mr S. B. M’Carthy, S.M., passed sentence upon Stanley Austin Joseph Suckling. Accused, who is a young manned man with one child, employed as a carter by tho New Zealand Express Company, hud pleaded guilty to a charge that on December o, at Christchurch, ho had stolen ono hag of sugar, valued at £l, the property of tho Now Zealand Government Railways.
