Arrangements havo been made for the publication of special stories and illustrations. The issue, which will consist cl sixteen pages, will mate a special appeal to young folk. Particulars will be given later. It is desired that the Christmas Number should do something to ’ help the Province, and it has been decided that this may be achieved by means of several compositions, with prizes for the winners. The subjects andl tho amounts of the prizes are:— AN EMBLEMATIC DESIGN. An emblematic design is wanted by the Canterbury Progress League. It is a subject which may profitably occupy the skill and taste of artiste, young . and old. What is wanted is something distinctively associated with the province. There is a wide field open to the imagination of the artist. Flow- ‘ ors, trees, birds,, animals, scenery, industries—tho whole bountiful field of art and nature is there to be drawn on. Tho “Star” will give a first prize of £3 35,, and a second / prize of £1 10s 6d for tho best designs submitted. The designs should be in line drawings. SLOGAN FOR CANTERBURY. Canterbury needs a slogan. So, far, “Advance Canterbury” has done duty, but it ia neither original nor inspiring. What is wanted is >a word or a phraso with a punch in it, suitable for adoption as the motto of a. body which is making the progress of Canterbury its business. Can you think of that word or phrase? The “Star” will give £2 2s for the winning slogan, and £1 Is for that placed second. A GREAT PLACE. . The advantages of Canterbury as a place in which to live and work, and the attractions which it offers for the investment of capital, embrace a subj’eot which can be succinctly and intelligently treated in a brief essay. What would you say to “boom” Canterbury to a man who had energy, money or , leisure to spend in New Zealand? Could you tell him in 150 words why he should come to Canterbury ? Try it. The " Star” will pay £2 2s for the best recommendation, and £1 Is for tho second best. The competitions will closa on Monday, December 16. The results will be announced in the Christmas Number of the “ Star,” in which the winning efforts will be reproduced, along with a selection from the works of the other competitors.
