The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr W. T. Lester) carried out. Urn opening eereinouv at, tlio Novelty Fair being bold in trie Lyttelton Oddfellow.A Hall by members of the Catholic Church. in aid o! tbe building fund for the now day pdiool to lio erected at the back of the church. for the Catholic children of tbe parish. Father Cooney, in l.be course of a short address, staled that the object of the fair was to raise funds for the erection o| the new Sr Joseph's School, which was needed so badly. They had a fairly good sum in band, hut noi, puffieiont to go on with the building; hut it was hoped to hare, sufficient funds in hand after fair (which would last three days) to commence its erection. In conclusion, he thanked the Mayor for attending the opening, especially at such a. time, when he was so busy with political engagements. Mr Lester, after thanking Father Cooney, sail] that it had always been his ambition to do all in bis power tor the betterment of Lyttelton, and he was pleased to he present at such a promising fair. He felt sure, after looking around the various stalls, that it must be a success.■ The object for which the Novelty Fair was being held was. a good one, and one that should he supported by residents of the port. The old school had given son - ice for the past forty years, hut it. was found that a new school was now necessary, and ho was certain that Father Oooncy could ho trusted to erect a, school that would do credit, to the borough. In declaring the fair open he wished the stall-holders success. • ■ In addition to the very fine display of home-made sweets, rakes, fancy and plain needlework, there were several needlework gifts donated by the various convents, which attracted considerable attention. An orchestra., comprising Miss M. 'Williams (piano), Air J. Loader (cornet). Air F. Knight:!* Masters ( . Conk and A. Alenand (violins), w'as in attendance. The vocalists included Airs 11. Ilhind, Aliss A. -Welsh and Miss R. Munis. Another feature oi the proceedings was the fancy dances, action .songs, recitations.' etc., by the school children. During the altermion the hall was crowded, and brisk business was done. Ihe stall-holders were: --Jumble, Mesdames 11. Rhind ami Bald ami Alisses Millinms (I 1 ); produce Alesdanies Al. K. ■ O'Bogan, B. Dillon and ti. Muir; cakes. Mesdames Congreve, M'Neill and Aliss AL Burn ; sweets, Alesdames B. J. Burns and J. Bitcaithly and Aliss Gellily: variety, Alisses Al. Brown, K, AB.Conville and K. Sargentina ; plain and fancy sewing, Airs ,11. Gallagher and Alisses Gallagher•’ refreshments. Alesdames J. Tourney, J. Alea, d. AFGownn and F, Toomev. Misses Al. Litfnro. M’Gowan ami I nomey ; hoop-la. Air C. Afadden ; hra,ntiih, school children. A numlxM - of guessing compclitions were conducted.
