BOROUGH COUNCILS.
LYTTELTON. Tht, Lyttelton Borough Council met lust evening; present—the Mayor (Mr AV. T, Lester), and Councillors E. G, Norton, G-. S. Morris, ,T. T. Norton, M,. J. Miller J. Gower, J. H. Collins, J. AVobb, and AV. J. Elliott. Tlio secretary ct the Postal Department, ■Wellington, wrote in reply to a request from the council in reference to the removal of the slot telephone at present situated at the corner of Norwich Quay end Dublin Street to the corner of Canterbury Street and Loudon Street. The letter stated that the present silo would bogivon a trial for at least one year, as it was most convenient for West Lyttelton residents. It further stated that consideration would he given at the end. of that period to the installing of an additional bos at the site suggested by the council. The Mayor said ho did not know that it would bo worth while for the council to reply, but it still could not see why the people of Lyttelton should bo penalised by having to |>ey sixpence to ring np Christchurch whilst the people of Christchurch could ring up Lyttelton for a penny. Councillor E. G. Norton said ho considered that tho letter was net a reply to the letter from tho town clerk, and he proposed that tho town clerk be instructed to again write to tho department on tho subject. Tho report of tho Waterworks Committee recommended thet tho stun or £SO bo paid to Mrs Weir for the extra work done by tho late waterworks engineer, Mr J. AVeir, in installing the new plant at the works; such pay to include six weeks’ holiday due to tho late Mr Weir. Tho recommendation was adopted. The Works Committee rocommcndcd that, instead of match-lining the ehed at Corsair Bay at an estimated cost of £3, e. new buildin"'2oft by 10ft bo erected, at an estimated cost of £63, on the understanding that the present lessee, Mr *L Loader, is agreeable to nay 8 per cent, interest on the cost of construction. 'The recommendation was adopted. , • , , , , Discussion took place regarding wnat should ho done with a life-saving reel presented by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Councillors Morris and Collins contended that, there being no surf or current at Corsair Bay, the reel was of no value, as no one made use of it, nor apparently knew how to use it. Councillor Miller said that tho reel had been presented to tho council and they should look after it. Ho was of tho opinion t.hat the local shimming club should take care of tho reel and, if necessary, should be encouraged to loam how to use it.
