RACING AND TROTTING.

(By "ARGUS.”)

The work at Rjccarton this morning was not particularly interesting. Moat of the local horses are having a qu)iet< time, alter their exertions at the recent meeting, Hut some of the trainers sent their charges along, ip view of engages ments at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s fixture this weekSt Winnow' was responsible for a useful gallop over a milo this morning, Tremena assisting her over the Jaat seven furlongs. St Winnow may wan n, decent stoke pver n journey before long, as she stays well. Hicro and Burrangoug were too good for War form in a gallop over six fuN longs this morning. The first-named pair are likely to bo well supported in any race they take, part in at the South Canterbury meetingGa wreck hit out freely in a mile gallop this morning. He is in good fettle, and he may pick up a race soon. The Riccarton jockey, F- C. Porter, met With a painful accident yesterday", getting the little finger of hia right! hand' caught in ono of the cogs of a, windmill. -He was taken to the Hospital, where the finger was amputated. R. J. Mason has given his team an; easy time since the close of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, and they have not been on the track this week. Their next racing engagements will probably be at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Sir George Clifford ba.? some of his horses engaged at the Feildin- meeting at the end of this month, but it je doubtful if they will mnko tho trip north. J. M'Combe sent his tw-o-year-old filly bv Martian—Margnretbc for a smart sprint on the plough at Riocarton this moming. After bis return to the sheds, tho filly dropped dead. This is a, piece of had luck for her connections, as she showed promise of developing into a useful sort. A filly by Achilles from Malevolence, the dam of Cerberus., an inmate of HLongley’s stable, created some excitement ait Riccarton this morning by getting away from her attendant. Phc careered through the. opening at the crossing, and after jumping the rail?! she fell. When she got up she bolted into the trees, and subsequently galloped down the road. She reached her own stables, but she received such serious injuries in the accident that she! died soon after her arrival homeSir George Clifford has sold the thvce-year-old gelding Strathglass, by Sanquhar—Telescope, to the Otago sportsman, Air W. H. L. Christie. Riccarton stables are fairly well represented at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting this week. Thev will go south to-morrow, and with other horses resting after their recruit exertions the local tracks will be quiet for the next few daysMr F. C. Gother, who was appointed acting secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, on the resignation of Mr W. li. E. Wanklyn a short-time ago, had his first experience in his new r position at the meeting which was concluded on Saturday. Undertaking the duties on tho eve of tho club’s most important fixture, Mr Colhor was thoroughly tried out, but ho had all his arrangements in excellent order, and tho fact of the meeting running along ho Smoothly from start to finish was a testimony to his organising ability. A number of visiting trainers from north and south left for their homes, with their horses, without waiting for tho conclusion of the Canterbury Jockey "Club’s meeting on Saturday. Others got away yesterday and in "a ,few days tho Riccarton tracks will present a normal appearance once more. Some of the local trainers will leave to-morrow for Tiniaru, to assist at tbo South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting this week. Rose Pink competed on the fust and second days of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting and was then shipped back to "Wellington. Sho will bo a competitor to-mumpy at the Ashhurst meeting, where she will bo given an opportunity to win tho Ashhurst Cup, a race sho captured in 1916 ami 1917. The Riccarton jockey. C. Emerson, was riding on the opening day of tho Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, but during the remainder of tho fixture ho was a spectator- Emerson has been in indifferent health lately and ho has decided on a long ?oa trip. He has ar’■•fngod to leave hero next month for Melbourne, where ho will tranship at the end of the year to a steamer bound for England. Ho will bn accompanied on lus trip home bv tbo well-known Australian jockey, F. Bullock, wbo is returning to England lor next racing season. Emerson will probably do sonio riding in England if opportunity offers, and bo may remain there, while it is unlikely that bo will return to tbo Dominion for at least a year. Tbo Hawke’s Bay owner, Air T. 11. Lowry, has been busily engaged lately selling various members of bis team and it is understood that he contemplates disposing of all bis horses in training with the exception of Desert Gold, who _ will probably be. retired to nor owner s stud. Air Lowry intends to leave in the autumn for Enclnnd, where he may reside for a year or two. 1. Davis will nceomnanv liis employer and will continue to train for him, tho intention being to pick up a few liorres there to carry Air Lowry’s colours during his stay in tho Old Country. H - Roberts, the well-known )\eat Least sportsman, was recently on a business visit to Australia and be was at Flemington on Atelbourne Cup day. Ho hurried bank in time to witness tbo racing on tho concluding davs at Addington and Riccarton. Evidence of tiio progress of raninein tho AVaikato is provided bv the pn> gramme winch tbo Hamilton Racine Club lias prenared for the mooting to be held in February. On the first dav the stakes will total 3000 sovs and oil the, second day 2500 sovs. or 5500 sovs for the meeting, compared with 4000 sovs Inst year. There will be no race on the programme of less value than 300 sovs, while tho principal event, the Hamilton Clip, lias been increased by 350 sovs, bringing it un to 3000 sovs. On the second day of the meeting the Waikato Handicap will be worth 700 sovs, which is an increase of 200 sovs. 'Hie chief sprint race on the opening day has been raised by 200 sovs, bring! ing it to 600 sovs. while the similar second jlay event has been advanced trom 350 sovs to 500 sovs. hi connection with last week’s meeting. the New Zealand Alctronolitan trotting Club paid £10,665 33s 6d to the Government in taxation, includin'?' general tax £5(334 2s lid, dividend tax £-1921 11s and tax on stakes £llO. Several of the horses who competed at. Addington last week, especially those Who were none too" sound on their legs, felt tho effects of the racing, and will have to be eased in their work.* N. L, f’rice purchased tho pacer George Hard yesterday. George. Hard nasi a most extravagant' action and when first put into work ho took a very long time to come to his speed; in fact, it seemed doubtful if he would ever be bt. to race. He seemed to find great difficulty in negotiating the corners on the Addington track, but, curiously enough, when the smaller training track was opened, he worked a uood deal bolter on it, and on guiu ; hack to the larger track be lound"liufc difli-

calty in getting round tho corners. He is a rare good stayer, but unfortunately, when on tho top of his form, lie went .wrong and was given a long spell. Since last being put into work lie has failed to come back to his best showmg, Tasker deserves a lot of credit for his perseverance with George Hard. ACCEPTANCES. SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.
