The Duke of Rutland, who has gold his Harhv estates in the Ynlo of Belvoir, replying to a message from tlie tenantry, writes The crushing taxation which has resulted from the war, coupled with the groat rise in the price of ail commodities and labour, have placed such burdens on property like the Belvoir as to compel me to effect every possible reduction, and largely to diminish the size of my estate.” Brigadier-General 'William Strong, of Thorpe Hall, Peteiborough, who has decided to sell bis estate, told the villagers he regretted having to. do so, but as one-third of his income now went in taxation it was impossible for him to maintain the hail and estate.
