Tipperary, Ireland, in 1849, and served in the Armed Constabulary at Home before coming to New Zealand in 1374. when he took up duty as eonstable at the Christchurch railway station. He then left for Ashburton for a short period, afterwards being transferred to Pleasant Point, where he- became a well-known and popular figure during the iwen-ty-ono years bo re- ! mained in the Kairlie district, jhirimr the maritime strike bo was sent to do special duty in Wellington. He was also selected for service during the ! •Jonathan Roberts escapade. p'ront Pleasant Point the • late Mr Stanley went, to Rakaia, where 1m remained until 11X13, when he retired on superannuation, after contracting a cold at the time of the Raka.ia railway accident. His end was hastened owing to his youngest son being killed ! in Trance in September. 1918. The deceased leaves a widow and a grown-up fa.milv of four daughters and three sons by his pre-deceavsed wife to mourn their loss. 1
The. coal qtiestion was expected to figure largely in the City Council’s deliberations last night on a notice of motion by Councillor C. P. Agar that the council should go out of business. Howover, it was discovered that Councillor Agar had not complied with the standing orders in the matter of lodging his motion in writing, and for this reason and others he asked leave to hold the matter over, and his request was granted.
