PROTEST FROM AVONSIDE.

ERECTION OF BURWOOD BRIDGE.

The Avonside Burgesses’ Association, in a letter read before the City Council last night, protested against the district being charged avith its proportion of the cost of erecting a bridge at Burwood, as Avonside had never been consulted when attached to the Heathcote County Council, ami tho bridge, was useless to its ratepayers. Councillor IT. F. Herbert said that negotiations for the new bridge had been opened by a land syndicate, which Intel bought a block known as Kerr’s land, but the land had been cut up in large blocks, the smallest lot being sixteen acres. The land might not be opened up for years, nnd the ratepayers were right in protesting- The syndicate bad agreed to pay £SOO. Wainiairi County a third, and Heathcote two thirds, but ' the negotiations wore foolish, and Waimairi did not, want the bridge, which would cost 50 per rout i more than on the original estimate. Either the matter should be held in abeyance nr the council should not touch it. Alternatively Limvond ratepayers intended to hold an indignation meeting. Councillor D. G- Sullivan said that the bridge, was useless. Councillor J. A. Flcslicr said that the By-laws and Finance Committee had called for a precis of all correspondence, and the committee’s attitude was that tho matter should be opened de novo. The matter was referred to the committee for full investigation.
