Some idea of tho number of visitors to the borough on Labour Day may be gathered from the following tramway figures, compared with last year’s:— Passengers (1918) No. 6 route 8120, North Beach 4915; total, 13035; 1919, No. 5 route, 10198, North Beach ’7677; total 17875 j increase 4840. The annual smoke concert in connection with the New Brighton Surf Chib was held in the pavilion on Monday evening, the captain, Mr C- T. Moseley, presiding. Tho following toasts were honoured Amy and Navy,” proposed by. Mr L. C. Matson and responded to by Captain Owles; “ Our Soldier Members,” proposed by Mr C. T. Moseley and responded to by Sir C. Webb. Tito toasts of “ Kindred Clubs,” “Tho Ladies,” “The Surf Club,” “ The Press,” “The Brighton Batchelors” and “ The Married Men” were honoured in good style. Musical and otner items wore given by Messrs Cbas Webb, Alex Day, R. A. Campbell, G. T. Robinson, C. Cooper, J, Broome, M. Guthrie and G. L. Cull. In proposing the toast of the Surf Club, Captain Owles mentioned that the present membership was about four hundred. Nearly three hundred had been on active sendee while twenty had made the supremo sacrifice. PERSONAL. Mr Alexander has been appointed caretaker at the Main School, and Mrs Hially caretaker at the North Beach School. Feeling reference was made to the death of Mr Joe Dunn, whose absence at tho piano ivas keenly felt at the Surf Club’s annual smoko concert. On the suggestion of Mr C. T. Moseley a silent toast to his memory was honoured. THE BRIDGE. Great satisfaction has been expressed in the borough at the result of the conference of representatives of local bodies which was convened by the New Brighton Borough Council, and attended by the Mayor (Mr F. Kibhlewhite), Councillors J. Gamble and W. H. Bellamy and Mr J. F. Eanies (town clerk). New' Brighton' residents know that a new bridge is' absolutely necessary and it is felt that tho conference has brought this improvement a decided step nearer. In all probability tho New Brighton War Memorial will bo linked up with tho bridge, and it is fitting, apart from all utility purposes, that the entrance to the borough should be worthy, and wido enough, to accommodate the traffic of tho future. PLEASANT POINT. Councillor Sincock is desirous of having some improvement effected to the jetty at Pleasant Point and as a means to this end Councillor Murison and he have been appointed a deputation by the Borough Council to wait upon the Power Boat Club. Tho suggestion is that a hand rail or other side protection should be provided for the jetty which now runs out a considerable distance from the ahere and is at times exposed to severe winds. , COUNCIL COMMENTS. One of the most satisfactory documents that had been before the council for some considerable time was a letter from the Valuation Department advising approximate increases for th© 1919. 1920 valuation. New Brighton had suffered under the disability'of not having had a revaluation sine® 1013. The

i » figures supplied moan an increase of [ over 50 per cent. This will afford tho . council great relief. The council have [ decided to call in the band instrument* r forthwith. Efforts aro being made to ; arrange for free band concerts by outi side hands during the season and in ad- . dition, it is hoped to have tho Salvation Army Band occasionally. Building permits seem likely to grow into record figures this year- With only half the period gone ninety-three have been is- , sued of a value of £19,380. | PICTURES. .
