1851 SCHOLARSHIP.

AWARDED TO CHRISTCHURCH STUDENT. The 1851 Exhibition (Scholarship for this year has been awarded to Mr Eric Arnold Rowe, of Canterbury CollegeMr Rowe, who is a son of Mr T. AY. Rowe, barrister and solicitor, of Christchurch, came up from Christ’s College to Canterbury College in 1914 with a junior university scholarship. He passed first section of the B.Sc. examination in 1915, and qualified for tho Degree in 1916. In 1917 ho obtained the Degree of AT.Sc. with Honours in Chemistry, presenting these on colloidal particles and on certain properties of alkaline salts. It is understood that as 18-51 Exhibition Scholar Mr Rowe will devote himself to tho subject of colloidal chemistry, of which he has made a special study. The 1851 Exhibition Scholarship is the most valuable Research scholarship which a graduate of tho New Zealand University can obtain, and the fact that hath this scholarship and the Rhodes Scholarship have been awarded in tho same year to Canterbury students reflects considerable credit on the College. The first 1851 Exhibition Scholar produced by Canterbury College was Sir Ernest Rutherford (1894).
