—_ NOTES AND NEWS. [Fnow Oca Correspondent.] . SOCIAL GATHERINGS. A pleasant afternoon was spent on Wednesday at the residence of Mrs I>. owanston, of Blenheim Road. Several musical items were contributed. Among those present were Mrs A. W. Rankin, Mrs Rattle and Mrs C. and AT. H. Barrel!. On Thursday a most successful sale of work took place in the Town Hall, Clarence Street, the bazaar being in connection with th© Methodist Church for the purpose of raising funds for a new Sunday school. The stall-holders were:---Mrs G. Watson (plain), 'Mrs Campion and Mrs M’Lean (fancy). Mrs vf- -Barrell and. Mrs-J, Bowden and Miss Snowball (cake and produce), Mrs Hooper, Mrs W. H. Barrel! and Miss , Fairweather (lollies), Mrs E. Cargill and Miss Caygill (tea room), Mrs .Bates, Mrs Ghmpson and Mrs Eight (competition), Mrs Carr, Airs Dunn s and Miss Campion. During "the evening Bickerton’s Orchestra contributed musical selections. Recently a very enjoyable gift, after* noon was given by Mrs John Brown and Mrs C. TV. Barrell at the residence of Mrs Brown, TVest Belt. There were sixty ladies present, and those who contributed items were Mesdamet Rattle, Caygill, Fletcher, A. Barrell, Dickenson, W. Barrell, Saudford andMiss Bowden. \, A large number of friends of Mr anil Burgess,. Division Street, assembled at their residence for the puipose of presenting, their host and hostess with tokens of esteem. ,Mr R. Hanna presented Mr ’ Burgess with a case of pipes and Mrs Burgess '"with a handbag. Musical items were rendered by Misses T. Hanna, E. Cross, Mrs . Croft, R. Trying, W. Hanna,' R. Hill, and T. Stokes. A most enjoyable evening was spent. ’ ", A very pleasant evening was spent at the residence of 1 Mr. T. Bennett, Mandeville .Road. Those who contributed musical items were Misses I. Hit mi a, D. Cross and Messrs R-. Irving. W. Weir. T. Stokes. R-. Jones and W Hanna. Miss Eva Thompson acted ns accompanist. y '■ The Town Hall was well filled on Tuesday night when the usual weekly dance was held. The floor'was in good o™er. Mr BettelT supplied the music, Mr E. Townsend played an extra, aiid Mr Jack Henry carried -out the duties of-M.C,„ 1 . w cricket: Oh the occasion of the opening of the cricket season Mrs A. D. ForcV entertained members of the local cjub at afternoon tea.. The. committee expressed their thanks to Mrs Ford for her hospitality. •- ‘ W.E.A. The usual class meeting of the ” .E.A. was held on Tuesday evening in the Town Hall. The question of wages was dealt with by the tutor, Mr J. G. Poison,. M.A;., when various theories "were interestingly discussed. | CLARENCE STREET CORNER. I Residents will be pleased to know that the Borough Council has been successful. in securing the corner of Clarence Street and Riccarton Road, for the purpose of rounding oh the corner. This will secure to pedestrians and wheel traffic a good view, and thus minimise the risk of accidents. STREET NUMBERING. The council lias finally decided on a street numbering scheme, and has let a contract. All numbers are to be placed on the gate posts. This should meet with the general approval of householders.
