RAILWAY MATTERS.
REVISED SERVICES,
STATEMENT BY MR MASSEY. [From Ora Correspondent;.] WELLINGTON. October 21. Mr Massey told a deputation to-day that the whole of the suburban railway services were under consideration and were being revised. Tie hoped thov wounl_ be improved. He agreed that one of the main remedies for tho housing problem was improved suburban services, but thov could not do everything at once. The partial suspension of services during the war, followed by tho coal cut, created difficulties which they could not overcome ail at once. As a matter of fact w© were not out of the wood yet. He hoped there woiud he no difficulty in the future, but one could never speak with certain ;v. In saying this lie was referring to tho coal supply. It was t-he.pulicv of tho Government and the Railway Department to meet the requirements of the people. From his experience as a resident of Auckland and Wellington ho knew that conditions and circumstances were constantly changing, and what might be good enough one year was not good enough the next. The Department had to move with the times—and would do so—realising that the railways- were the property of the people ana were run to meet the people’s needs.
