BETTING TELEGRAM.
ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD.
An alleged forged betting telegram putting £lO on Gold Kip, which won the Hoathcote Handicap on tho third day of the Grand National meeting at Christchurch, is being investigated by the police. The case is supposed to be on all fours with the case ventilated at Auckland recently, and curiously enough the horse and tho amount are the same in each case.
In tho latest case tho telegram was handed in at Christchurch, but the local bookmaker to whom it -was addressed became suspicious and stopped payment. It is understood that the police are making searching inquiries to find out who is the culprit in regard to the whole matter. The allegation is that the 1 telegram was put in after the raco was run, and that if it had been acted on as genuine the bookmaker .would have been victimised.
In the Auckland case, it is understood, the bookmaker became suspicious because the particular client had not had .a betting loss for a very long time, and such genius for “picking Vinners ” was quite extraordinary. Gold Kip was second favourite in the race which he won.
