EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The Canterbury Education Board mot to-day; present—Messrs E. H. Andrews (chairman), C. S. Howard W. A. Banks, H. .T. Bigncll, J. Maze, G. W. Armitago. -T. Jaml" on, A. Pcvorill, T. Hughes, \\. I*. Spencer and C. H. Opie. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Appointments Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Winchester School Committee, protesting against pupils being taken off the roll in order to ho driven to the Geraldine school. Letters had been received from the Provisional Committee of the Geraldine Flat district, to the effect that in only one case, that of a child under ten years of age, was the distance less than three miles. It had been agreed to hold over the question of building a new school at Geraldine Flat until a general meeting of householders, fixed for October 13. had been held. It was agreed to point out to the Department that it would be impracticable to arrange to convey the children to ‘four separate schools, owing to tho expense. A letter had been received from the Department, regretting its inability to approach the railway authorities in the matter of the railage of children attending the Hokitika District High School from Kumara and declining the hoard’s request for tho recognition of bicycles as a means of conveyance. It had been agreed to inform the school committee accordingly and to ask those concerned to endeavour to arrange for a conveyance for the children, towards tho cost or which tho board would make liberal provision. A letter had been received from the New Zealand Educational Institute, objecting to the publication of an inspector’s favourable report on a school on the ground that it constituted a breach of tho hoard’s instructions to committees. The committee could not recommend the board to take any action in this matter, as the publication of such a report was in no way contrary to tho spirit of tho board’s suggestion as contained in tho covering letters sent with tho reports. It was also pointed out to the institute that the board already did what it could to lessen the interval that elapsed between ! the retirement of one teacher and the taking up of duties by Ins successor. With regard to the suggestion that there should bo a system of reciprocity among education boards’ in the matter of the appointment of teachers from outside districts, it was pointed out that all applications from any part of New Zealand were carefully considered by the hom’d. A letter had been received from the Woolston School Committee asking that the services of the teacher to whom notice had been given might ho retained. It had boen explained to the committee that tho board had no power to alter the Department’s regulations, in which case the teacher must bo withdrawn on expiry of tho notice already given. The report was adopted. APPOINTMENTS. Tho following appointments were approved:—Blackball, Miss D. Glasson (pupil teacher); Culverdcn, Miss E. M. Lcversedge (mistress); Grcendale, Mr 0. W. "Williams (master); Halkctt, Miss F. Wilson (mistress. S.C.); Lyttelton Miss H. M. Fraser (assistant mistress); Mackenzie, Mr L. B. Bradstock (master); Mason’s Flat, Mrs Bold (sewing mistress); Milford, Mr W. M. Burrows (master); Moana, Miss M. E. Moore (mistress); Pareora East, Miss C. Bain (assistant mistress'); Temnka, Miss I. Morrison (assistant mistress); Timaru Main, Mr B. H. Low (head master), Miss D. vStrachan (assistant mistress). RESIGNATIONS. Tho following resignations were received and accepted;—Ashburton, Mr W. M. Burrows (assistant master), Miss 1. M. Rapley (assistant mistress); Beckenham, Mr R. Abcrnethy (assistant master); Claremont. Mr R. H. Holmes (temporary master); Dromore, Miss L, Jeffries (mistress); Greenpark, Miss H. I. Trcacy (assistant mistress); Hazelburn, .Miss M. Maider (mistress); Lyttelton "West, Miss H. M. Fraser (assistant mistress); Ruapunn, Miss M. Ximmo (mistress): Temnka, Miss M. Proudlock (assistant mistress); Wee dons, Miss I. M. Dalzicl (mistress).

AGRICULTURE AND MANUAL TRAINING. The Agriculture anil Manual and Technical Committee reported that Mr Mat-bin’s request for apparatus to bo used in connection with the exhibition of lantern slides was referred to the Normal School Committee for consideration. It was agreed to make an application to tho Department .for a grant to build a woodwork room at Amberley. Tho report was adopted.

FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the Akaroa Advancement Association stated that it was willing to pay olt cho £-500 on tho school site if the board would remit the interest due. It was recommended that the board should agree to remit half the interest duo on tho amount owing. Accounts amounting to £1461 11s 9d had been passed for payment. The report was adopted.
