CHRISTCHURCH TO PORT.
MINISTER OPPOSES TUNNEL ROAD.
[Feom Our Correspondent.]
WELLINGTON, October 2,
Mr Ell recently asked the Minister of Pnblic Works to have a report made on the cost of tunnelling a roadway to Lyttelton through the Port Hills. Sir William Fraser replied to-day: “I regret to have to inform the honourable gentleman that I cannot favourably consider this proposal. The deviation on the Lyttelton-Sumner Road now being constructed will afford very fair means of access between Christchurch and Lyttelton for a long time to come.”
