MAfiIST BROTHERS' SEKIOB TEAM. The, supporters of tie Marist Brothers' Old Boys bwuor Jtugby football team tendered a compameatary social to the team m Uo Art Gaaery last evening. There was a large attendance, including the Mayor (Dr /limcker), bir George Cutford ins Lorasrup ijisnop Brcdie. Very Itev l)r Kennedy, Very liev uean iiegnaun, Kev i altera Granam, M.A., Murphy, rionetto and Koche. Xnere were also present Kev Brothers Justin, I'helau. aud iu-isiried anu ofhcials of the liugby Union and the Keferces Association. Sir George Clifford, president of the jfarlst Brotnera Old Boys' Association, congratulated the Marist Senior team on wiamn" the D.C.L. shield. He also paid a tribute to the losing team for their clean, straightforward play. ° His Lordship Bishop Brodie also complimented the team on their victory. Sometimes, he said, people asked that football uhould not bo supported. The speaker neid a different view. He considered that football was. an upright, manly game. Many of the members of the Marists' team tad taken part in the more serious game. There were eleven returned soldiers in the Senior team. (Applause.) His Lordship, continuing, said that the team owed thanks to the ladv barrackers. He attended the final match, and he could say that he had never heard better barrackers than tho ladies. In conclusion, the speaker thanked the members of the Rugby Union and the members of the Keferees' Association for tho compliment they had paid the team by being present. Mr S. F. Wilson, on behalf of the Canteroury Tlugby Union, then handod the shield to Mr D. M'Cormick, captain of the Senior teanT The fourth and fifth grade teams wero presented with banner;;. Mr Wilson explained that, a shield was being maia lor tho #sirfh grade team, but it was not yes ready. He hoped to have the honour or presenting the shield at a future date. Dr Thacker said that.ho was delighted to be present to add his congratulations to tho victorious team. He referred to the Mansi toachen, who, he said, had taught their boys to play football in a clean, straightforward manner. He called for three cheers lor {Le Marists'' team. The medals were then presented to the Senior team by Sir George Clifford. Mr P. J. Burns, the team's coach, was presented with an enlarged photograph of the team. Bishop Brodie was also presented with a photograph of the team. During the evening euchre playing and dancing were indulged in. Supper was served r, »by the ladies.
