WORK OF RED CROSS.
ACTIVITIES TO CONTINUE. The future of the vast Red Cross organisation built up during the course of the war was referred to by the Hon R- H. Rhodes, M.P., in a brief address at Tai Tapn on Saturday. ‘ England/’ said Colonel Rhodes, leading officials of the Red. Cross Society hope that it will be able to work under one head with the St John organisation. There is going to be, as far as I understand it, an international league of Red Cross Societies and simibodies, and a proposal has been made to hold a conference in Geneva. New Zealand will be asked to send a delegate, as well as every other country having Red Cross branches. That league will lay down general rules and conditions for the future work of the Red Cross. The scheme has great scope. It is proposed that the Red Cross should take over such work as the welfare of women and children and the care of infants, and I take it a conference will be set up in this country to decide on the future of our own organisation.” slr J. A. Flasher (president of the Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society): Yes, the matter is under consideration. Colonel Rhodes said that he sincerely hoped Red Cross activities would not be allowed to lapse, and that the society would amalgamate with the St John Ambulance Brigade, because then they would have a very much stronger organisation ,and be able to do a good deal more than they had been able to do m wartime. They could follow the example of a league of Red Cross Societies in this country and branch out in many other directions. 1
